Patient monitoring

Patient monitors, central monitoring stations and parameter modules.

What is a patient monitor?

Patient monitoring continuously tracks vital signs: ECG, SpO2, non-invasive and invasive blood pressure, capnography, temperature. Bedside monitors connect to a central monitoring station, which brings a department's beds together on a single workstation and stores the waveforms.

Where is it used?

Patient monitoring is deployed across an entire department rather than device by device: bedside monitors, a central monitoring station at the nurses' station, and sometimes transport monitors. This fleet-based approach makes the choice of manufacturer a structural decision, as parameter modules and cables are not interchangeable from one brand to another. An intensive care unit, an operating theatre and a recovery room do not have the same needs in terms of monitored parameters. Planning at the time of purchase for the modules that can be added later avoids replacing the fleet when needs change.

What to check before choosing?

  • Parameters measured as standard and modules that can be added later
  • Modularity: a transport monitor that detaches from the bedside follows the patient to imaging or the operating theatre
  • Networking with a central station, and waveform archiving capacity
  • Screen size and readability from a distance at the nurses' station
